Quidient recently spent three memorable days at the 3D Metrology Conference (3DMC). 3DMC is an annual gathering of academics and industry experts featuring presentations, workshops, and special interest sessions. Our CEO and President, Scott Ackerson, and Manager of Solutions Group, Joe Conrad, traveled to Loughborough University in the United Kingdom to meet with experts in 3D metrology, to offer live demos, and to host a special interest session on generalized scene reconstruction.
Before the conference, Joe met with Robin Holmes, a student at Loughborough University, to test the Quidient Reality® app. Robin used our app to capture a sculpture of a balloon dog. Because it’s so reflective, the balloon dog showcases the unique capabilities of the Quidient Reality Platform. Systems such as photogrammetry or structured light scanning would struggle with a material like this, but Quidient Reality uses generalized scene reconstruction to capture its material properties, resulting in a model that can be placed into a new lighting environment and adjust its reflections accordingly.

Without prior training, Robin was able to capture this highly reflective sculpture, as you can see from the picture below:

Once the conference itself began, Scott and Joe set up our booth on the exhibition floor alongside exhibitors such as Hexagon Metrology and the National Physics Laboratory.
Quidient also introduced the Generalized Scene Reconstruction Special Interest Session on the second day of 3DMC. Attendees learned the makeup of a 5D model (3D matter field + 2D light field=5D), the benefits of GSR, and the definition of Plenoptic Condensation™, which is Quidient’s unique approach to GSR. Quidient displayed the results of our Plenoptic Condensation™ in the 5D models of our balloon dog and a satellite docking ring created for the Space Force. We also gave a live demonstration of Quidient’s dent detection capabilities on a car hood. The balloon dog and dent detection were crowd favorites!
A wonderful part of the 3DMC schedule includes the workshops and post-conference events. There were so many chances to form new connections during the day and at night. There was a conference dinner held at the National Space Center. It was a great chance to mingle with attendees in a different environment from the conference. After 3DMC, the Quidient team was able to get in some sightseeing in London. Joe saw Big Ben and Parliament and enjoyed ramen before returning to the United States. You can see pictures from Joe’s trip below:

Quidient would like to thank the organizers of 3DMC for another wonderful experience. We want to thank: Johannes Brand, Ben Hughes, Stephen Kyle, Benjamin Montavon, and Mark Sanders. We look forward to continuing to grow our relationships with individuals we met during the conference.
